I know we are on our “summer break”, but Matt and I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to do a Wood Talk Online at AWFS 2009. It was the first time Matt and I met in person and we had an awesome time at the show. In this episode, we give you our initial impressions of the show and a quick rundown on the things we thought were most compelling.

I was amused by the “introduce last year’s new tool as this year’s new tool” trend, but Rikon seemed to take it to the next level. A few years back, Rikon used to offer a 10″ jointer/planer combo, which I bought. Then it went off the market. This year Rikon is introducing a new 12″ jointer/planer combo, and a brand new 10″ jointer/planer combo, which is really — you guessed it — the same 10″ jointer/planer combo that went out of the market a couple of years back. It even has the same model number that it had before!
Even so, I’m glad to see it back in production. It’s a really nice machine for not much money, and it works really well in a small shop space.
Wilbur,
Could you elaborate on the Rikon 10″ Jointer/Planer Combo? You mention that it’s a really nice machine for not a lot of money. I’m new to woodworking so that machine sounds like it’s right up my alley.
How easy is it to adjust the tables…and are they spot-on coplanar? Is the fence square and adjustable? Are you running 110 or 220?
A couple more questions I forgot…how easy is it to switch between operations? Overall build?
Now if they would just introduce last years ‘new’ tool at a ‘new low price’ it would be just great!
Thanks guys. Its good to see you both together having fun
