Patreon Supporter Questions

  • Rich asks us how long before our all consuming love of woodworking died away to a normal crazy level.
  • Tom asks if we ever edit out unexpected noises from our recordings like bad singing, flatulence, or children screaming.
  • Steve wants to know how much protect hard wax oils really provide. And is an oil finish better first when depth and luster are needed.
  • Bill has a big, fat slab of Cedar/Juniper and asks how he should go about sawing it.
  • Adam wants to know if Matt is the one singing the Lumber Update podcast theme song.
  • Stephen asks about quality bandsaw blades and what really makes a blade good. Do they have to be disposable?
  • Greg asks how to best finish Wenge when an all black look is desired.
  • Adria’s bandsaw cuts with a nice gentle curves and asks how she can correct it outside of buying a fancier saw.

Adria’s bandsaw – I think I’ve had this same problem with long boards, and I wonder if it’s due to switching between pushing and pulling the board half way through the cut. I find it really hard to pull the board up against the fence as accurately as pushing, and even if you do it could be referencing the outfeed and not the infeed portion of the fence and if the fence is slightly curved that would cause this problem. I think the answers could be outfeed support like Shannon mentioned, so that you don’t need to pull the board as long – or to Marc’s point, trying to focus on referencing the infeed portion of the fence even during the pull segment.

I’ve got some kickback, but first I want to let you know that I love the show! I’ve gone through every episode on Spotify and I’ve even listened a number of them. So, concerning Adria’s bandsaw. Last year I bought an old 14” Delta bandsaw. It cut like a tree swaying in the wind. The first thing i did was buy a new blade. I bought a STARRETT Duratec from Woodcraft. GOOOO WOODCRAFT!!! It’s not an expensive blade, good quality at only $20-$25. That helped a lot, but it didn’t completely fix it. I then bought a new Cobra Coil Tension Spring by Carter Products, I got it at Woodcraft for $31. GOOO WOODCRAFT!!! I then set it up using the Snodgrass method and it GREAT!! The bandsaw is now my favorite tool. The higher tension was the key. I imagine my spring had lost tension over time. I don’t think it is a big leap to think that a cheap bandsaw might have tension spring that is “cheap”. Before purchasing an expensive blade or fancy bandsaw I would suggest buying a good inexpensive blade, perhaps a little wider as well. Then I would upgrade the tension spring. Thank you for not quitting as I continue to listen waiting for the episode explaining how to make knitting needles.
