WT358 – Workbench Tops and Deadmen

On today’s weekend show, we’re taking 2 questions on workbenches: top material and the effectiveness of the deadman

What Are We Talking About

Jeremy said…

Knowing the range of the types of projects the 3 of you typically do, I am wondering how useful actually is the deadman on a shaker/roubo bench? I am sure this mostly depends on how much edge jointing you do, but how much do each of you actually find it useful?

and this question from Kris

I know that hard maple would be a top-choice for a bench top. However, if money doesn’t permit, what are the downsides to using douglas fir (2x4s, 2x6s, etc) for a work bench?

WT356 – Woodworking Sponsors and YouTube

On today’s weekend show, we’re talking about YouTube and Fine Woodworking as well as getting sponsors

What Are We Talking About

Anonymous said…

Being a cord-cutter, my main source of viewing entertainment is watching vids on YouTube with woodworking being one of the primary subjects of my viewing pleasure. However, I’m finding myself more and more turned off by the woodworking that is coming out of the popular channels on YT. This is not a slam on the people themselves, because there is some entertainment value in their videos, but merely the quality of the pieces that they are putting out there. I’m concerned now that this is influencing the general public’s opinion in thinking that a 2×6 screwed-together picnic table is better than something you can buy at Ikea simply because it is “handmade”. I know that I am getting more and more inquiries for commissions on these kinds of projects. How do you guys use your channels/influence to shine a light on “fine” furniture? Or is that something that is in your purview? Is there a compromise somewhere between the two sides? Sorry for the lengthy email and thank you for putting out legit woodworking content for this wannabe!

and this question from Chip

hey guys! enjoying your podcast! I was listening to your talk about “the pitfalls of an online business” and have to admit I’m very surprised to learn that your primary source of income does not come from your woodworking business. While I’m not new to woodworking I am a bit new to the business side. So I guess my obvious question is – where does your primary source of income come from? I really don’t know much about sponsors and podcasting, so if there is revenue opportunity there, I’d like to learn about it.

So part 2 of this question is how does one become attractive to a manufacturer to hopefully become a sponsor? And what exactly does a sponsor do?

WT352 – Lower Quality Wood Products in Our Homes?

On today’s weekend show, we’re talking lower quality wood products in your home.

What Are We Talking About

Ryan said…

Guys, just wanted to get your take on this. A couple of years ago I bought a new manufactured home from a builder with one of the best reputations in the area. The wood used on the interior of the house is all some kind of fiberboard. The cabinets are fiberboard skinned with veneer, while the stair railings, baseboards, and any other kind of trim is fiberboard covered with white paint. When doing my walk-through of the house I was surprised to see that they left the stair railings with big bumps where each screw had been drilled through the fiberboard handrail into the baluster (that’s why you avoid using screws with fiberboard, duh!). I had them sand it down flat and repaint before taking ownership. I know I’m not buying a custom home and in exchange I’m paying a lower price, but it still bugs me a little knowing these lower quality wood products are in my house. As a woodworker that seeks out quality wood to build from, how do you feel about the wood products used in your home?

WT350 – The Mulligan Show

On today’s weekend show, we’re talking about a bunch of stuff as we are grabbing a whole bunch of email questions.

What Are We Talking About

Jacob Morrill
What would you say are the quintessential wood working furniture projects that one could build and be able to say “If I can build these, I can build anything”?

John Verreault
What temperature extremes (cold and/or hot) do you three gents call it quits for woodworking outdoors?

Bob De Vries
Hello Marc et al, I’m hoping you are willing since I know you are able, to help me with this. I purchased some cherry for a project. As I am milling it I find a fair amount of sap wood and other parts that aren’t as cherry colored as I would like. I hopefully will be able to find enough color match that I like but I got to thinking about the wood set aside. I understand cherry is photo reactive, Shannon correct me here if I got the term wrong. Does cherry darken all the way from the heart to the xylem and phloem? Will the sap wood darken if so to what shade? If not is there a way to color it? Would you try to even out the colors? Now wooden shoe rather be woodworking? Thanks so much

Tommaso Valeriano
Since Marc has moved back into the lands of seemingly unending winter, he now has to heat his shop. What do you guys use to heat your shops? And sawdust, we all produce a lot of it, have you guys looked into using it as a heat source?

Kevin Kittinger
Hi Marc, Shannon, and Matt. How do you handle and dispose of left over solvents like paint thinner, alcohol and lacquer thinner. After cleaning bushes I usually have a quart mixing cup that is 1/3 full of nasty looking solvent. Do you dump them into a gallon container and bring a mixed solvent container to local hazmat center? Just curious.

OrgMyShop
I know each of you consider yourselves content creators as well as woodworkers. But if you weren’t a woodworker, what kind of content would you create?

Matt Green
If you could only get one would you get a Domino or a mortising machine.

WT348 – Nadda Finga

On today’s weekend show, we’re talking about a deal to gain invulnerability in the shop.

What Are We Talking About

Chris said…

You’re approached by a magical, deal-making wizard who offers you the following scenarios. 1. Wake up tomorrow morning missing a finger of your choosing (you would be missing this finger only from the tip to the closest knuckle.) In exchange for this, you would have the comfort of knowing that you will never experience any shop mishap. You will experience no pain (phantom or otherwise) from the removal of your finger. You will simply wake up tomorrow morning with this new norm. Or 2. go about your life as normal. 10-fingered but with the reality of risk. As I’m writing this, I’m realizing it isn’t really 2 scenarios so much as it is 1 deal. My question. Would you take that deal?

WT344 – Go Big on the Tool or Get Accessories

On today’s weekend show, we’re talking about buying cheap tools in favor of more accessories or not.

What Are We Talking About

Joshua said…

I’m looking to get into turning by buying either the Harbor Freight 10″ Lathe for $219 or the 12″ for $100 more. If I buy the cheaper one, I’ll have money left for chucks and other accessories. Any suggestions as to which I should get? I’m looking to spend no more than $350. I already have a set of traditional tools but no grinder to sharpen them on. So that’s a factor as well. I’m leaning towards the cheaper 10″ lathe so that I can pick up the Rikon 8″ slow speed grinder for sharpening. I don’t want to blow my whole wad on just the lathe and then have no effective way of sharpening my tools.

On today’s weekend show, we’re talking about getting a grain and color match in a panel.

What Are We Talking About

Brian wrote in and asked:

I have been making large pieces of wood into smaller ones for about 3 years now. The next thing I really want to work on is matching wood and getting better with hiding joints in glued up panels. I know you have done many different videos on the subject, but I’m wondering how this is done if you, like me, are purchasing rough lumber?

I know you can see the grain and color to a degree, but I’ve had no luck in getting solid matches. Do you just have to buy extra and hope some of them work out, and others work on another project?

WT274 – Bridal Chest Construction Advice

On today’s Wood Talk “Weekend Edition” we’re giving construction and design advice to a listener on his bridal chest project.

Email

James – I am planning on building my future daughter-in-law a bridal chest for their wedding in October. I want to make it out of frame and panel construction. I bought some sapele for the main structure, but I would like to make the panels out of a complimentary wood. Can you reccomend a complimentary wood that will look good with Sapele. I would like to use an exotic veneer on the panels, but I can’t, because I really like the profile of my Freud rail & stile router bit set, and I wouldn’t be able to raise the veneered mdf panel. I have made a veneered mdf panel before, surrounding it with matching hardwood, but that is really a pita. I could not find a plan that included the way I would like to build this chest. I plan on making separate frame and panels, then connecting one panel to another, using dowels, with the dowelmax system. Will there be a problem with wood movement using this method? And what about the lid? Should I make it with frame & panels. Or just laminate the boards to make a wide lid? If I laminate, should I use breadboard ends?

On today’s Wood Talk “Weekend Edition” we’re talking about the value of our work and how we determine it.

Email

Todays show was inspired by an email from Anthony:

I have a questions regarding the monetary value we place on craftsmanship today as opposed to that of earlier generations. Example George Washington paid $145.00 for an ornate secretary bookcase [Mt Vernon virtual tour] in 1797. Aside from the obvious historical value, if simply adjusted for inflation the same item would cost roughly $3,800.00 today[measuringworth.com]. Not an outrageous sum but in all honesty I doubt it could be replicated for 5 times that amount today. It would appear that this kind of hand built quality has become more out of reach than ever before. How do we put a price on the pieces we build that justifies the labor and material but also make them accessible to those that appreciate what we do? Marc how much for that sculpted rocker?

This topic is inspired by an email from Nick:

I’ve heard you mention several times on the show that you make commission pieces from time to time but I also know 2 of you (I guess Marc too..) have separate day jobs, so I’m curious to know what kind of business license/model you have for your side woodworking commissions.
I’m sure there are resources out there for folks who want to start their own business but I’m curious to hear how you guys operate and if there are various options to consider.

How about you?

WT255 – Are We Proud of the Things We Make?

On today’s Wood Talk “Weekend Edition” we’re talking about the early days of our woodworking careers and how long it took before we were actually proud of the things we made.

This topic is inspired by an email from Nathan:

I’ve been woodworking for about two years now, and I’ve built maybe four or five major projects, including a desk, a workbench, a tool chest, and several other smaller ones. I am yet to be fully satisfied or “proud” with anything I’ve built. My wife and other family members marvel at my abilities, but all I see when I look at my projects are all the flaws and things I could have done better. Am I just being too hard on myself, or is this a usual feeling when starting out? I know that I could rebuild the projects I’ve done and make them even better, but time and money won’t allow it for now.

How about you?

Do you think you suck? Are you proud of the things you make?
